The 2023 Honda CR-V is the start of the sixth generation of this compact SUV, ranking as one of Honda's most popular SUV models. As you might imagine, Honda has made a number of changes to make the CR-V more stylish and spacious than ever before. You can see these changes for yourself when you stop into Ryan Honda if you're on the hunt for a Honda CR-V for sale in Louisiana. As soon as you see the new CR-V at our dealership, conveniently located in Monroe, you will be struck by its rugged exterior looks and awed by its comfortable interior, complemented by an innovative touchscreen in the center console.
You'll also notice the performance upgrades on the 2023 CR-V, with its choice of 1.5-liter Turbo I-4 and 2.0-liter I-4 Hybrid powertrains. But one of the most subtle changes is something you may not notice at first glance. This is the enhanced Honda Sensing safety and driver assistance features on the 2023 CR-V. Most of these come standard, while additional tools are available as options. Honda Sensing has been designed to make the 2023 CR-V one of the safest compact SUVs on the road. It has also been created to help you better handle the things life and the road might throw your way. So what exactly does this extensive suite offer to drivers? Let's take a closer look.
What Is Honda Sensing?
Honda Sensing is a suite of driver assistance features pioneered by the engineers at Honda to improve passenger safety. The first full set of features was introduced to the Honda CR-V for the 2015 model year. Now, eight years later, Honda is expanding this platform. The system takes in information from a front sensor camera and built-in radar, then processes this through the onboard computing system. The old system used a 50-degree view on the camera mounted behind the front windshield, which has now been expanded to a 90-degree field of vision for the 2023 CR-V. This provides more information to the Honda Sensing system, giving you better real-time responsiveness in the features.
Honda has also changed the placement of the millimeter-wave front radar system for the Honda Sensing system. Where it had previously been located below the Honda logo in the front grille of the CR-V, it has now been mounted directly behind the Honda logo on the 2023 CR-V's grille. This increases the field of view for the radar from 50 degrees to an expansive 120 degrees. With these sensors, Honda Sensing will improve responsiveness for its various features. It has also enabled Honda to offer more standard features on the Honda Sensing system for the CR-V than ever before.
What Are the Standard Safety and Driver Assistance Features on the CR-V?
There are eight different standard functions on the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver assistance features for the 2023 CR-V. This is two more than in prior models of Honda's popular compact SUV. Each serves a special function to improve the safety of the CR-V while helping you better handle driving the vehicle in different conditions.
One of the first active safety features developed by Honda is the Collision Mitigation Braking System. This applies the automatic emergency brakes if the system detects an imminent collision with another vehicle. The system has been improved over the years to also detect pedestrians and bicyclists who may inadvertently enter the path of your CR-V. When the system detects a possible collision, it automatically applies the brakes to avoid a collision or reduce its impact. This also works with the Forward Collision Warning to inform you that a possible crash with another detected vehicle is imminent by sending out visual and audible alerts. This allows you to take evasive action to prevent an accident.
Drifting out of the lane is something that can happen to all of us. We get distracted momentarily, only to find that our CR-V has crossed over a center divider or a parallel lane. This is a major cause of many highway accidents. Fortunately, the 2023 CR-V features Lane Departure Warning, which will alert you if you have drifted over a marked lane on the road. The CR-V also has a Lane Keeping Assist System, which uses slight steering adjustments to keep your vehicle in its lane. This helps you in two ways. First, if you drift out of the lane, it will work with the Lane Departure Warning to get you safely back inside the lane. Second, if you are on a long drive, it will help to reduce fatigue by taking over more of the minor steering corrections. Honda has even improved the system by making the steering smoother and more natural while increasing resistance to crosswinds.
One of the more novel features of the Honda Sensing system is the Road Departure Mitigation System, which detects the edge of the road by looking for painted lane lines, even ones that have faded or become broken, to prevent the 2023 CR-V from leaving the road. It can even detect road shoulders and curbs. If the system finds that the driver may be at risk of leaving the road, it will use steering adjustments to prevent this.
Another standard feature on the 2023 Honda CR-V is Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow. This feature is offered on other brands, but often as an additional option or only on higher trim levels. The way this works is that you set a cruise control speed. If a slower-moving vehicle enters your lane, the system will reduce your speed to maintain a safe following distance. If the slower vehicle leaves your lane, it will return your CR-V to your preset speed. It will also return to your preset speed if you change lanes.
Two of the newest standard features are Traffic Jam Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition System. No one likes being in a traffic jam, and one of the biggest hassles is maintaining your speed and steering. Traffic Jam Assist works like Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist System by helping guide you through traffic at a safe speed. As for the Traffic Sign Recognition System, this will spot the traffic speed limit sign and let you know the current speed limit along the way. This will help you better comply with the speed limit and avoid costly speeding tickets.
What Additional Features Are Offered With Honda Sensing?
There are a number of other Honda Sensing features available on the 2023 CR-V. These either come standard on higher trim levels or are included as part of a package. Either way, they will enhance the standard active safety and driver assistance features that are part of every 2023 CR-V.
The Blind Spot Information System will help you change lanes more safely. It uses a millimeter-wave radar system installed in the rear corners of the CR-V to detect vehicles in your SUV's blind spot. This will let you know when the coast is clear before you change lanes on a busy highway.
This works similarly to another optional feature, Cross Traffic Monitor. While every 2023 Honda CR-V has a rearview camera, sometimes you can't see beyond the corners of your vehicle when backing out of a space. The Cross Traffic Monitor helps go beyond this by detecting vehicles and pedestrians who may be about to cross behind your CR-V. This will alert you if this occurs, much like how the Blind Spot Information System helps you change lanes.
Parallel parking can be a challenge for many drivers. Getting your CR-V into and out of a tight space is never a fun thing to do. The available Parking Sensors are a set of four sonar sensors in the front and back of your CR-V that work to help guide you safely into a parking space. These sensors will pick up any objects, including non-metallic ones. This is why Honda uses sonar, not radar, which usually only detects metallic objects. Honda also offers a Low Speed Braking Control that will stop your CR-V if the sonar sensors detect an object in your path when getting into or out of the spot.
Finally, Honda has added a way to ensure driver attentiveness. If the available Driver Attention Monitor constantly checks your behavior behind the wheel to make sure you aren't becoming too fatigued. If it thinks you are becoming inattentive, it will display an image of a coffee cup with a 4-level bar graph. If you continue to show fatigue, fewer bars will appear. At two bars, a pop-up message will appear advising you to take a break. If you continue driving, a beeper will sound, and the steering wheel will vibrate. At this point, you should find a safe place to pull over and take a rest. This is just another way for Honda Sensing to keep you and your passengers safe.
The 2023 CR-V Is Safer Than Ever With Honda Sensing
Honda has taken steps to not only make the Honda Sensing safety and driver assistance features better on the 2023 CR-V than in prior generations, but it has also added a number of new features as well. Whether you decide to stick with the standard features or opt for the additional ones as well, the fact is that the 2023 Honda CR-V will be looking out for you on every mile, thanks to the extensive Honda Sensing safety and driver assistance suite.
