The Honda Civic is a beautiful piece of machinery that has defined what most of us think of when it comes to a small car for more than 50 years. When it first hit the road in the 1970s, the Civic was a subcompact beauty offered with either two or four doors; these days, the Honda Civics we find on the road have changed a lot, but there are still plenty of options available.

If you’re looking for a used Honda Civic for sale near Ruston, then it can make your life a lot easier to know what’s out there and consider what will best meet your needs. New models might be exclusively four-door affairs, but coupe options were available until quite recently so there are many of them in great condition as pre-owned models. Let’s briefly go over the different Honda Civics to get a sense of what you’ll find and we’ll help you decide on which model could best meet your needs.

The Civic Sedan

Honda’s very first Civic was offered as either a two-door subcompact fastback or a three-door hatchback, but it has come a long way since then. Today, the standard version that people think of as the core of this lineup is the Honda Civic Sedan, a stylish four-door car that is incredibly fun to drive. For the 2001 model year, the Civic was redesigned for its seventh generation as a compact model, and it has remained in that class ever since. You’re not likely to go that far back (let alone any further), so every used Civic you find will be a compact car.

For many of us, the Civic Sedan is what we think of first when talking about this car because it is the perfect example of everything it’s meant to represent. Small in general but with a spacious interior that comfortably seats four or five people, this Civic is perfect for getting around Ruston each day and taking care of everything you need. Unless you’re looking for something bigger, this Honda Civic is ideal for commuting, getting your kids to and from school, and enjoying your days off.

We also like to think of this as the foundation for the Honda Civic and that other models act as a variation of it, looking at what’s out there. It’s a great place to start that’s designed to meet the needs of the widest range of drivers. So, if you know you want a Civic, but you’re not sure about any particulars beyond that, then the Sedan is the perfect jumping-off point. It’s not necessarily right for everyone, but it gives you a terrific sense of what you’re looking at.

The Civic Hatchback

If you like the basic features and options of the Honda Civic but want a trunk that is more accessible and functional, then the Civic Hatchback is a great choice. For the most part, whatever you can find for the Civic Sedan, there’s a comparable Civic Hatchback available; this gives you tremendous freedom as you’re looking at different used models since it means you can find great features on both. It also makes things easy if you don’t have a strong preference for one or the other since you can look at both the Sedan and Hatchback body types for what you need.

As we pointed out earlier, a hatchback version was available even at the very beginning for the Civic, and it has remained a popular option throughout many generations. Today, new Civics are only offered with a sedan or hatchback design, so if you want the latest features and options when exploring pre-owned vehicles, then you’re still in luck if you prefer the functionality of the Civic Hatchback. This is an especially fine choice if you’re interested in something with overall usefulness similar to an SUV but you prefer the style, size, and drivability of a sedan.

The Civic Coupe

One of our favorite options over the years, a Honda Civic Coupe is a stylish and sporty version of the Civic that has only two doors rather than four. The first Civic in 1972 had only two doors, and a four-door version did not become available until its second year in production. With its second generation at the end of the 1970s, Honda eliminated the coupe model and only had something similar available as a three-door hatchback. But with its third generation, a Civic Coupe returned and remained available throughout the 1980s and beyond. With its most recent redesign and update for the current seventh generation, Honda once again discontinued the coupe version since it was falling in popularity, but we still love it. If you’re like us and want the style of a Civic Coupe, then look for a model from 2020 or earlier.

The Civic Hybrid

The shift from a subcompact to a compact model isn’t the only noteworthy thing about the Honda Civic’s seventh generation; this is also when a hybrid engine was first introduced. Offered initially here in the US for the 2003 model year, the hybrid version of the Civic is remarkable as it provides one of the sportiest and most efficient cars on the road with even greater gas fuel economy. Looking at the 2025 Honda Civic, for example, the standard Sedan gets an EPA-estimated 32 MPG in the city and 41 MPG on the highway; a 2025 Civic Sedan Hybrid, however, gets an EPA-estimated 50 MPG in the city and 47 MPG on the highway. That’s a massive difference, and you’ll find comparable boosts to efficiency for the Civic Hybrid regardless of body or model year.

The Civic Si

As far as we’re concerned, the Civic is already a fantastic vehicle that’s incredibly fun to drive, but Honda has always been a company that pushes the envelope. As such, the Civic Si is the first of two enhanced options that provide you with greater performance and an even sportier ride for getting around Ruston. Looking at the standard 2025 Honda Civic, it has a 2.0L four-cylinder engine with 150 hp; if you go with a 2025 Civic Si, however, then you get a 200-hp turbocharged engine. This is also one of the only ways to get a manual transmission on the Civic these days since a continuously variable transmission is now your only option on the traditional Civic Sedan and Hatchback.

The Civic Type R

As your second option for bold, sporty performance, the Civic Type R goes even further with incredible power. To keep comparisons simple, the current 2025 Civic Type R features a remarkable turbocharged engine that delivers 315 hp, ensuring you have an amazing time on the road. In terms of design, the Type R is essentially a boosted Civic Hatchback, so it offers plenty of room up front and in the back row for your passengers, plus a rear cargo area that you can load up with everything you need. That means this is a great daily driver that is incredibly fun to drive. We’ve only had the Type R here in the US since the 2017 model year, so keep that in mind when looking at used options.

A Fantastic Series of Civics

As you can see, when it comes to the Honda Civic, you have a lot of different options available to you. We find it often helps to start with the kind of performance you want from your vehicle since this guides you across four main options: a standard engine, hybrid, the Civic Si, or the Type R. From there, you can then consider if you want a sedan or hatchback body based on the sort of engine that will work best for you.
